Crishni reflects on the importance of staff wellbeing being seen as part of inclusive and compassionate culture and a top priority for all leaders. “We have to try and make people feel safe to say that they’re not ok.”
She stresses that senior leaders need to role model looking after their own wellbeing and recognising own vulnerabilities. (And that cake is always good!)
We are shortly approaching the two year anniversary of the first national lockdown. Many of us have reflected on the last two years and the experiences we have been through. For senior leaders in particular, reflection and recognition of the journey travelled, both for themselves but also for their teams and colleagues, is often really important.

Having worked in healthcare since 1990, including national roles at the Department of Health, director for both the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit in the Cabinet Office and 2 years as CEO of NHS Confederation, Rob is now CEO of South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. As well as leading the Trust, Rob is leading the work of the West Yorkshire and Harrogate integrated care system (ICS). Rob is defined by a values based approach to leadership. He has a history of effective partnership working and a strong commitment to system leadership. Rob reflects on the weight of being a senior leader in the NHS, what is important for him and how he looks after his own wellbeing and that of those around him.
Richard was appointed as Chief Executive of Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in June 2017. He joined from University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust where he worked as Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer for four years. He is also the Executive Lead for the Mid Notts Integrated Care Partnership and Chair of the East Midlands Cancer Alliance. Richard believes all patients should receive the level of care we would want our friends and families to receive. He views teamwork, lots of encouragement, support and kindness as essential to the delivery of high quality, safe patient care. Patricia has worked for the NHS for 30 years and joined Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as Director of Operations in 2011. She was appointed as Chief Executive in September 2014 and the Trust is currently a key partner in the Our Dorset system, a wave one Integrated Care System (ICS). Whilst working in the NHS Patricia has remained passionate about improving the lives of patients and staff in ways that matter to them and was named as one of the top 50 CEOs in 2019. Patricia is also one of only a handful of BAME CEOs in the NHS provider sector and is passionate about equality, diversity and inclusion. Sir James Mackey, known as Jim, is Chief Executive of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. He returned to his substantive role as Chief Executive of the trust in November 2017, a post he previously held for ten years. He was welcomed back after completing a two-year secondment in a national role as Chief Executive of the NHS Improvement.
